Do you want to start a blog? Great! I’m about to do the same. But why? Why are you doing this? What are your goals? What do you want to write about? Who is your audience? It’s essential to have a clear understanding of why you are doing this.

This is where your blog mission statement comes in.

A few sentences about your why, what, who and how.

It is essential for you to have a clear mission statement for your blog:

  • It’s a great reminder of why you are doing this. Something you can come back to when you’re feeling lost.

  • It keeps you on track and helps you with decisions.

  • It will help you find blog topics that align with your goals and exclude the ones that don’t.

  • Your audience gets a better understanding of what they can expect from you.

Why you need a powerful blog mission statement and how to create one.

So how do you come up with your blog mission statement?

You have to ask yourself a few questions:

  • Why do you want to blog?

  • What do you want to blog about? What value do you have to offer? What questions do you want to answer?

  • Who is your audience?

  • How you’ll do it

Let’s create my blog mission statement

When I originally started this blog, I intended to write about my journey from working 9-5 to building my own business (I had no mission statement). Now I want to write about my experiences as a new blogger who tries to create a successful blog.

Why do you want to blog?

Before:

I‘m not sure. Because I have time? Nothing else to do?

Now:

I want to live a happy, healthy and independent life and have the freedom to work on my own terms.

I wrote a blog post about “How to get clear about what is really important to you” that may help you with this.

What do you want to blog about? What value do you have to offer? What questions do you want to answer?

Before:

My journey from working 9-5 to building my own business. Tagline: A former employee exploring a new way of living (sounds cool, right?).

The problem: This “new way of living” wasn’t nearly as exciting as it sounds. In fact, it was quite dull. I didn’t travel the world, didn’t made a lot of new experiences, … I was at home most of the time trying to recover. So my blog topics where limited:

Blog Post 1: Petra on the couch.

Blog Post 2: Petra’s still on the couch.

Blog Post 3: Will binge-watching Netflix finally bring the enlightenment?

Blog Post 4: Petra became one with the couch.

Now:

I want to blog about my experiences as a new blogger trying to create a successful blog. I want to answer the questions a new blogger has about how to start a blog, the tools I use and the tips and tricks I learn along the way.

Who is your audience?

Before:

Ideally: Everyone in the whole wide world will be interested in my journey!

Realistically: My parents (unfortunately they don’t have internet), my boyfriend (my rock – I love you), my beloved sister and my friends (thank you guys for everything)

Now:

Fellow new bloggers

How you’ll do it

Before:

Hmmmm … I don’t know … what do you mean?

Now:

I’ll learn everything I possibly can about blogging and the tools you need to create a successful blog. I’ll test and document so that I can share what works and what doesn’t.

Now let’s summarize the answers into a powerful blog mission statement

I want to live a happy, healthy and independent life and have the freedom to work on my own terms. I write about my experiences in creating a successful blog to help new bloggers along the way. I do this by learning everything I can about this specific topic.

As I’ve mentioned above this statement will help you a lot on your way. Come back to it regularly to stay inspired and whenever you need guidance.

One last thing: You don’t have to make your mission statement public and share it on your blog. Especially as your “why” can be very private. I have a modified version of my blog mission statement in the “About Me” section of my sidebar.
