At the moment, we’re living in very uncertain times. It’s April 2020, and here in Austria, we’re in week 5 of quarantine and social distancing because of COVID-19.
Before quarantine, I hardly ever made time for what’s really important for me, my values. I love being outside, but it could happen that I didn’t leave the house for 4 days in a row. I love hanging out with my family and friends, but I hardly ever make time for that.
Now everything changed.
Right now, we reconnect with our values. We recognize what’s actually essential for us, and we actually do these things because, well, we have the time for it.
- We read books.
- We have Zoom calls with family and friends.
- We go for walks.
- The list goes on.
But how can we make sure that we don’t forget about all of these important things after quarantine? How can we make sure that we live according to our values when we go back to normal?
FIRST, WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT TO MAKE TIME FOR OUR VALUES?
Well, if we don’t make enough time for our values, for what’s really important for us, our life feels out of balance.
We might get frustrated, bitter, burnt out, unhealthy, …
We want to focus on 2 areas of our lives that are usually most neglected: You and Your Relationships. We don’t forget to make time for work, but we often forget to make time for ourselves and our loved ones.
So grab a pen, paper, and your calendar and let’s get started.
AREA # 1 – YOU
We often neglect what’s important for us because we might feel selfish or guilty when we make time for ourselves.
But that’s not the case.
When you don’t make time for yourself, everything else in our life will suffer.
Take a moment to think about:
- What’s important to me?
- What do I want to do?
- What fills my cup?
- What lightens my up?
- What do I enjoy doing?
Examples: regular exercise, getting enough sleep, eating healthy, spiritual connection, your hobbies
Now we want to make sure that we actually make time for these things.
Think about how often do you want to do it?
When do you want to do it?
Take your calendar and start blocking time for everything you want to do.
AREA # 2 – YOUR RELATIONSHIPS
Good relationships keep us healthier and happier. So the time we spend with friends and family isn’t just for fun. It’s an investment in our health & wellbeing.
The people you love and who love you deserve more than getting whatever time is left in your schedule!
Take a moment to think about:
- Who are the people that bring value to your life?
- Who makes you laugh?
- With whom do you have a great time?
- Who sparks your creativity?
- With whom can you be really silly?
- With whom can you have real, meaningful conversations?
Now we want to make sure that we actually make time for these people.
How can you make time for these people in your calendar?
How can you make sure to meet them regularly?
If you have a friend you want to mee for lunch regularly, always schedule the next appointment before you leave.
If it’s a larger group of people, it works best to set a fixed date, e.g., Dinner every first Saturday of the month.
Now that you’ve identified who and what is really important for you and you’ve blocked out the time in your calendar – STICK TO IT.
Remember: This is what lights you up, this is what brings you joy and fulfillment.
